You don’t need a boat for the first reef. Fish gather around coral 20 m off all of Koh Lipe’s beaches1, and the main beaches are Sunset Beach, Sunrise Beach and Pattaya Beach4.

Bigger animals turn up more often at the park-edge sites: 8 Mile Rock, Stonehenge and Ko Pung1. Out there, sharks, whale sharks and manta rays1 can be seen. Wikipedia puts 25% of the world’s tropical fish species4 in the area.

Longtail or beach entry

Shared tour or on your own

Most snorkellers join a shared longtail trip, but the beach reefs need only a mask. Your choices:

Island longtail hop: ฿501

  • Shared longtail tour. A longboat takes 10-15 people to 3 snorkelling spots1 for the day.
  • Adang Sea Divers’ shared tours. These include a mask and snorkel, lunch box, water, fruit and life jackets2. Fins cost 100 baht a pair2 extra.
  • A seat on a dive boat. Wikivoyage says Forra Diving lets snorkellers join its day trips for 500 baht, lunch and equipment included1.
  • On your own from the beach. Wikivoyage lists Kathalee Lipe Resort with free kayak and snorkel rental1. Long-tail boats run between any two points on the island for ฿501.
  • A private boat. Book a whole longtail for your group, such as this private longtail and snorkel day.

On Adang Sea Divers’ tours, the Program 1 boat takes at most 12 snorkellers and has no professional guide2. Non-swimmers can add an in-water guide (see the fees below).

Koh Lipe lies on the border of the Tarutao National Marine Park4, outside the jurisdiction of the neighbouring 51 islands1. Adang Sea Divers’ snorkel tour prices don’t include the National Park fee2, so budget for it on top.

What it means for you:

  • In the closed months, Adang Sea Divers runs a Green Season snorkel tour that generally visits Koh Kra, Koh Ussen, Koh Adang and Koh Taru2.
  • For divers, Adang Sea Divers calls the Green Season (June to October8) the best time to dive. It says whale sharks are more common from May to September9.
  • Adang Sea Divers gives 10% off8 dive courses and fun dives in the Green Season.
  • In the low season, from mid-June to mid-October4, the only way to reach Koh Lipe is by speedboat from Pak Bara.

Before you book a wet-season trip, check the monsoon season ferry and sea conditions.

Currents, reef rules, fines

Safety in the water

Currents and park rules matter more here than gear. Before you get in:

Sunscreen fine: up to ฿100,00010

  • Currents around Koh Lipe are mainly tidal, so strong at certain times of the month1.
  • The Jabang reef sometimes has stronger currents and has ropes for safety2.
  • Stay close to your group and never snorkel alone2.
  • Non-swimmers should book an in-water guide, which Adang Sea Divers recommends for non-swimmers2.
  • Stonefish have been seen in Koh Lipe’s waters1. Protective footwear helps, though the chance of a sting is slim.

Questions people ask

Can snorkelling cause pulmonary oedema?

It can. Divers Alert Network says swimming-induced pulmonary oedema can affect scuba divers, breath-hold divers and swimmers.
