What to try

These are Satun and Southern Thai dishes named by Thailand’s tourism bodies. Satun is one of four Thai provinces with a Muslim majority⁴.

Satun: a Muslim-majority province⁴

Kaeng Pad Ja Ree

A pineapple curry, a signature dish of Satun province usually made for special occasions⁵. Eggplant and roasted cashew nuts⁵ can go in as well as pineapple.

Chaloo Pad Khai

Made with salty shrimp paste, eggs, chopped bird’s eye chillies and shallots, and often served with hot steamed rice and fresh vegetables⁵.

Nam phrik kapi

A spicy shrimp-paste dip, with the paste ideally made from opossum shrimps⁵.

Khao yam

Khao yam paktai is a tart, salty rice salad with ingredients such as carrots and long beans⁶. Its dressing is nam budu, made from fish or prawns fermented with salt⁶. TAT says few dishes say ‘Southern Thai cuisine’ more⁶.

Phat sato

Stink beans, usually stir-fried in a curry paste, and a popular snack in the South of Thailand⁶.

Pla thot kamin

Turmeric fried fish, a popular Southern Thai dish, most often pla daeng, a type of threadfin bream, fried until slightly crispy⁶.

Sunrise Beach is on the east side, and the Chao Ley (Urak Lawoi) villages sit mostly on the far east side, near Sunrise Beach². Daya Resort’s seafood restaurant is run by a local Chao Ley fishing family, who bring their daily catch up the beach and serve it in the evenings².

Elephant American Coffee House sits near Pattaya Beach, across from the Pink Market². Wikivoyage lists its prices at ฿40-800².

Bars, restaurants and convenience stores can sell alcohol without a break from 11 a.m. until midnight³. Thailand’s National Alcohol Policy Committee enacted the change on 29 May 2026³, The Asia Business Daily reported.

What this means for a visitor:

Koh Lipe stays open throughout the monsoon⁹, but Zanom Sunrise Resort’s restaurant opens only in high season, mid-November to mid-May².
Next year’s Ramadan dates are an estimate from the UAE’s Astronomy Centre, not a Thai announcement⁸, as reported by The National.
The Thai Meteorological Department forecast waves of 2-3 metres in the lower Andaman Sea in July 2026¹⁰, so expect rougher seas in the wet months.
