Malaysia to Thailand by sea
The Langkawi crossing is a sea border run, so the paperwork comes before the boat.
Crossing about 1 hr 30 min5
Bundhaya Speed Boat sails from Jetty Langkawi (Kuah Jetty), 15 October to 16 May. Satun Pakbara Speedboat sails from Telaga Terminal.
Buy as early as you can. Bundhaya emails a QR code, so there is nothing to print.
Non-Thai nationals must complete the Thailand Digital Arrival Card online within 3 days before arrival.
On the Telaga route, check in at least 90 minutes before departure. Boats from Langkawi take your passport at boarding.
The crossing takes around 1 hour 30 minutes.
Speedboats tie up at a floating pontoon built in January 2024; an immigration officer stamps your passport on arrival.
Koh Lipe sits in Satun Province1 on the Thai side. Ferries from Langkawi also run to Satun town6 on the mainland, so check that your ticket says Koh Lipe.
Once through, the island’s main beaches are Sunset Beach, Sunrise Beach and Pattaya Beach4. Sort out where to stay before you sail.
Telaga Terminal schedule
In shoulder season, ferries from Langkawi run only one trip a day1.
Check in 90 min before11
Satun Pakbara Speedboat Langkawi Sdn Bhd7 runs the Telaga boats. From Jetty Langkawi (Kuah Jetty), Direct Ferries lists 12 weekly sailings, all by Bundhaya Speed Boat5.
Sources disagree on the season. Wikipedia gives the Langkawi ferry as running from October until June6, while Bundhaya’s Kuah Jetty season runs 15 October to 16 May3. Plan around the operator’s dates, and check the best months for the island’s beaches.
Fares in ringgit and baht
Telaga fares are quoted in ringgit and Kuah fares in baht, so convert before you compare.
